Intercom is one of the best customer service platforms there is: inboxes, a help center, workflows, reporting, and its Fin AI agent. But it's built for growing and larger teams, and its pricing reflects that. You pay per seat ($29, $85 or $132 a month), and $0.99 for every conversation Fin resolves, on top.

For a small business with one or two people and a few hundred customer questions a month, that can mean paying hundreds of dollars a month for a platform you only use a corner of.

A note before we start: we make ConvoAsk, so we're not neutral. To keep this useful, every price below comes from each company's own public pricing page (checked on 14 and 15 October 2026), and we say where each tool is stronger than ours. Prices change, so check their sites before you decide.

Why look for an Intercom alternative?

  • Per-seat pricing. Every team member who answers customers is another $29 to $132 a month.
  • Per-outcome AI pricing. Fin costs $0.99 for each resolved conversation, so your bill grows as the AI does more work.
  • It's a lot of platform. Many small businesses only need an AI chatbot, live chat and somewhere to track the odd email.

Why you might stay with Intercom

Intercom is genuinely stronger for bigger teams: a complete, mature platform with inboxes, workflows, a public help center and reporting; email, SMS, WhatsApp and phone channels; enterprise features like SSO, HIPAA support and SLAs; and Fin can also work with other helpdesks. If you run a support team, it's hard to beat.

The alternatives, one by one

1. ConvoAsk: flat pricing for small businesses

ConvoAsk is an AI chatbot for small businesses that learns from your website and answers customers day and night, in their own language, showing the source of each answer. Your team can take over any chat, and visitors can reach you on WhatsApp, by phone or by email. It books calls (Cal.com and Calendly) and saves leads.

On the Pro plan there's a simple helpdesk too: tickets from chat and email, AI-drafted email replies, assignment, rules, internal notes and satisfaction surveys.

  • Price: 7-day free trial, no card; Starter $19/month (2,000 message credits, 3 team members); Pro $49/month (5,000 credits, 10 team members, helpdesk, API, no branding). Team members and AI replies are included, with no per-seat or per-outcome fees.
  • Good for: small businesses that want AI answers, live chat and a simple helpdesk for a flat price.
  • Watch out for: it's deliberately simpler than Intercom: no public help center, no SMS or phone channels, and no enterprise features like SSO.

2. Zendesk: the other big helpdesk

Zendesk is a complete helpdesk with tickets, workflows, SLAs, a multilingual help center and AI agents.

  • Price: from $19 per agent/month billed yearly; live chat from Suite Team at $55 per agent; AI resolutions $2.00 each after the few included.
  • Good for: support teams that need processes and reporting.
  • Watch out for: like Intercom, costs grow per agent and per AI resolution. ConvoAsk vs Zendesk

3. Crisp: an all-in-one inbox at a workspace price

Crisp prices per workspace instead of per seat, and brings chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS into one inbox.

  • Price: free plan (no AI); Mini $45/month with 4 seats; AI chatbot from Essentials ($95/month, 10 seats).
  • Good for: small support teams that want every channel in one inbox.
  • Watch out for: the AI chatbot starts on the $95 plan. ConvoAsk vs Crisp

4. LiveChat: mature live chat, per user

LiveChat is a long-established live chat tool with ticketing, AI agents and 200+ integrations.

  • Price: $19 per user/month billed yearly, with 10 AI resolutions; Growth $79 per user with 200.
  • Good for: teams whose people chat with customers all day.
  • Watch out for: per-user pricing and limited AI resolutions. ConvoAsk vs LiveChat

5. Tidio: live chat for online stores

Tidio has a generous free live chat plan, social channels and mobile apps, with Lyro AI as an add-on.

  • Price: free plan; Starter $24.17/month; Lyro from $32.50/month for 50 AI conversations.
  • Good for: stores and teams that answer chats by hand.
  • Watch out for: the AI is a separate bill. ConvoAsk vs Tidio

6. Chatbase: an AI agent with many integrations

Chatbase builds an AI agent from your content, with integrations, voice agents and enterprise options.

  • Price: 7-day trial; Hobby $40/month; Standard $150/month for the helpdesk and API.
  • Good for: businesses that need specific integrations or voice.
  • Watch out for: removing branding is a $99/month add-on. ConvoAsk vs Chatbase

What it costs: a worked example

One person, and about 300 customer questions the AI resolves in a month:

  • Intercom: Essential at $29 for one seat, plus 300 Fin outcomes at $0.99: about $326 a month.
  • ConvoAsk: Pro, $49 a month, including 5,000 message credits, so 300 conversations fit easily.

The gap grows as you get busier, because Intercom's AI cost rises with every resolved conversation.

How to switch from Intercom

  1. List your top 20 questions. Pull them from your current chat history: prices, delivery, opening hours, bookings, returns.
  2. Create a free ConvoAsk account and paste your website. It reads your pages and builds your chatbot's knowledge in a few minutes. Add files, Notion pages or Google Drive documents if your answers live there.
  3. Test it with those 20 questions, in your customers' own words, plus one question your website doesn't answer. Each answer shows the page it came from, and the chatbot should say when it isn't sure.
  4. Set up the handoff: live chat with your team, WhatsApp, phone, email or a message form, so people can always reach a person.
  5. Swap the code on your website. Remove the old chat script and paste ConvoAsk's one line in its place. We have step-by-step guides for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and Webflow, and a 2-minute video for the first three.

If you use Intercom's help center articles, add their pages as sources in ConvoAsk too, so the chatbot can answer from them.
